The Chicken or the Egg?

I've been reading John Webster's Holy Scripture: A Dogmatic Sketch.Very interesting stuff. On p. 43 he makes a claim that was particularly striking and insightful: "All other Christian doctrines are applications or corollaries of the one doctrine, the doctrine of the Trinity, in which the doctrine of the church, no less than the doctrine of revelation, has its proper home." For my own work in thinking about scripture theologically, this statement has far-reaching implications. I think that sometimes we think of the doctrine of the Trinity as derived from a particular theological reading of scripture, rather than of our theological reading of scripture as derived from the doctrine of the Trinity.
