The Library Needs your Input: Student Focus Groups

Albertsons Library Student Focus Groups

Albertsons Library needs your help! We are continually assessing our services, collections, and physical space, and we need input from both undergraduate and graduate students to help us plan for the future. To that end, the library is hosting two graduate student focus groups this semester:

GRADS:
Mon 4/14 (11:45-12:30)
Thur 4/17 (12:15-1).

UNDERGRADS:
Wed 4/16 (11:45-12:30)
Tue 4/22 (12:15-1)
Fri 4/25 (11:45-12:30)
Thur 5/1 (12:15-1).

All are invited, even those who rarely or never use the library! You'll be part of a small group of fellow BSU students discussing the library and library-related issues. Refreshments will be served, and we will offer participants a small token of appreciation (ie, Starbucks or bookstore gift card).

Please RSVP to:

GreenFILE available online

Ebsco offers free online access to environmental database
GreenFILE. Ebsco's description of the database:
GreenFILE: In keeping with our commitment to environmental consciousness, EBSCO proudly offers GreenFILE, a freely accessible research database focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond. Comprised of scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE will serve as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. GreenFILE’s initial release will include A&I for more than 600 titles, including comprehensive coverage - from to volume 1, issue 1 to present - for Bioscience (back to 1964), Conservation Biology (back to 1987), i>Journal of Ecology (back to 1913) and Journal of Environmental Planning & Management (back to 1948). The total number of records is approximately 295,000, and full text is provided for more than 4,600 records from open access titles.
Access is also available from the Library's Articles, Databases page.

What do you think about Early English Books Online?

Albertsons Library has begun a trial subscription to Early English Books Online (EEBO) that will last through April 30. As described on their website,
EEBO contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700 - from the first book printed in English by William Caxton, through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare and the tumult of the English Civil War.
EEBO will be of particular interest to students and faculty in English, History, and others working on research related to early English and early American studies. For more information about the database, please see the EEBO brochure.

Our access to EEBO is a trial subscription, which means that we are considering purchasing it but have not yet done so. We invite your feedback about the value of EEBO to teaching and research here at Boise State as we determine whether to pursue a continuing subscription to the database. Please direct your comments to
Jill Collins.

To learn about our other trial subscriptions, visit our trial databases page.

Try out a database or two

Albertsons Library has trial access to the databases listed below. Access from off-campus is limited to current Boise State University faculty, students and staff.

Go to the Trials page for additional database and login/password information. Any feedback that you can provide would be appreciated as we contemplate the ability of these databases to support programs at Boise State University.

Library Collection Grants Available!

A reminder that Albertsons Library is offering collection grants for the purchase of library materials in a specified subject area. These are competitive grants of up to $3000 awarded to teams of librarians and faculty members.

The intent of these grants is to work with faculty members to identify areas of the collection in need of special attention. The goal is to promote the use of library resources by making collections more relevant to the coursework and research interests of faculty and students.

Faculty members interested in applying for a grant should begin by contacting their library liaisons. Grant proposals may address a single academic area or an interdisciplinary topic.

Send completed applications to Carol Silvers, Albertsons Library, by Tuesday, April 15th, 2008. The grant recipients will be announced on May 1st, 2008.

Contact Peggy Cooper at 426-2311 for more information.

International Connections: Nancy Napier

Join Nancy Napier, International Business, for "Bending Bamboo: Boise State's Nine Year Project in Vietnam to Start Up the Country's First Business School."

Location: Student Union Building's Look Out
When: March 12th, 2008
Time: 12:30 to 1:30 PM

In 1994, before the US and Vietnam had normal diplomatic relations, Boise State was invited to become first American university to work in Vietnam. From a one year project to deliver our MBA degree to instructors at the National Economics University in Hanoi, Boise State's involvement grew to nine-year $8.5 million Swedish and US government funded project to help establish the country's first international standard business school.

In a country where the words "business," "management," or "market" did not exist, with faculty members who saw Americans as "evil devils," Boise State professors and administrators became ambassadors for the U.S. Over the nine year project, 25% of the College of Business and Economics faculty members were involved in the program. In addition, 84 Vietnamese came to Boise, Idaho, to do internships with organizations ranging from the YMCA and the Idaho Statesman, to Boise Cascade, Hewlett-Packard, and Penney's .

To date, Vietnam still holds the record for having the largest group of Boise State alumni outside of the US. Some of the graduates have started their own companies - one brought ATMs to Vietnam, a second runs Vietnam's software association, and a third is the financial investment advisor to some of the countries largest and most successful firms. In the process, Boise State gained notoriety and good press in the Asian Wall Street Journal, New York Times, the Idaho Statesman and NPR. Come hear about the program and learn more (perhaps even some of the stories that DIDN'T make the newspapers!).

Albertsons Library Adds 1800 New Research Journals From Elsevier!

Albertsons Library is pleased to announce an agreement with major STM publisher Elsevier to provide the Boise State University community with online access to more than 1800 of their journals. As a result of support from the Albertsons Library and the Provost’s Office, we are signing an agreement to provide the campus with access to all titles available from 1997 to date. Elsevier’s extensive and unique full-text journal collection covers authoritative and high-impact titles from the core scientific literature. The availability of this collection will provide support for current programs and research on campus including biology, engineering, health science, nursing, geophysics, mathematics, biomolecular and biomedical science, chemistry, and musculoskeletal research.

The “ScienceDirect” package is accessible from Albertsons Library's database list (http://library.boisestate.edu/indexes/), while individual titles may be accessed via our Journal Titles list (http://journals.boisestate.edu/) . Additionally, articles in Elsevier journals are now linked directly from most discipline-specific databases by using the "Find It at Boise State University” button.

Albertsons Library would like to thank all those who worked to support this major step forward in supporting Boise State University’s vision as a Metropolitan Research University of Distinction.
