Banned Books @thelibrary

2006 BBW; Read Banned Books: They're Your Ticket to Freedom
Banned Books Week (September 23-30) "emphasizes the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them" (from the American Library Association website).

Some of the most challenged books include “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, the Harry Potter series, and many more. Come check out our selection of Banned Books on the first floor of the library and take one home.

Meet Rick Stoddart

If you have that ‘deer in the headlights’ look regarding the wealth of resources and services available to you in the Albertsons Library…. well, so do I! My name is Rick Stoddart and I am a new librarian in the reference department.

Previously, I was a librarian at
Georgia Southwestern State University, a small school in rural southwest Georgia. I possess an MLIS and MA in Communication Studies both from the University of Alabama. Surprisingly, I don’t have a Southern accent, but that is because I was born in California and have lived in Montana for many years.

Just let me say I can sympathize with you regarding the library seeming overwhelming at first, but myself and the other friendly staff of the Albertsons Library are here to help. I know I will be asking tons of questions until I figure out where everything is. Don’t worry; we can both get through this together.

Color me ‘happy to be at Boise State’.

Rick

Library Survey Results

LibQUAL+
Last Spring the Boise State University Libraries asked students, faculty, and staff to participate in a survey known as LibQUAL+. Thanks to all of you who took the time to take the survey. We will be using the results extensively as we review and improve our library services and collections.

The LibQUAL+ survey is an international standardized survey that to date has been used by over 700 libraries. The survey looks at how library users perceive whether a library is meeting expectations in three broad areas:

  • Affect of Service
  • Information Control
  • Library as Place

Results are available for faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, staff, and library staff. While the library received many positive comments and generally met user expectations, some areas did not meet the expectations of our users.

In particular, faculty satisfaction with the libraries’ collections and access to information resources did not meet expectations. As Boise State expands into new programs and faculty research areas, the need for strong collections and access to electronic journals and databases will continue to be one of great importance for the campus.

The full results of the Boise State University Libraries survey, including general comments, are available at: http://library.boisestate.edu/libqual/

For more information about the LibQUAL+ survey see:

Internet: Retro Research

Many of us often reminisce about childhood TV shows, movies and icons. Check out these sites to refresh your mind with the details. On www.retrojunk.com you can watch the opening credits of a TV series, old movie trailers and TV commercials from each era. Many of the videos are in German, Japanese, or other languages. However, you might want to turn your pop-up blocker to high.

Good information on a TV series can be found at www.tv.com, which also has some video clips. If you want to know about the day and time or broadcast company of live action shows, go to The Classic TV Database, www.classic-tv.com.

Another group of sites is filled with unique random information. It has music, movies, TV, world events, fashion/fads from the 70’s to 90’s. Pay attention to the stuffed left-hand column (options change on almost every page). Visit www.inthe70s.com, www.inthe80s.com, or www.inthe90s.com to see more. For more scholarly research on Pop Culture, go to one of our many library subject guides.

New Databases @thelibrary

The library is proud to announce the availability of several high-profile research databases, including JSTOR, Web of Science, Nature, GeoScience World and more!

A complete list and description of these new online resources is available at our New Electronic Resources page. You can access these and a host of other online services via our Find Articles page.

JSTOR? JSTOR!

We said it once but it bears repeating: Albertsons Library purchased a campus-wide subscription to the entire JSTOR collection. The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines, including history, economics, political science, education, ecology, business, mathematics, music, and language and literature.

You can search the JSTOR database from the Find Articles section of the Library home page or find the individual journals in the Find Journals section. From the Journals List, select Vendor from the pull down menu, type in JSTOR, enter, and all of the journals in JSTOR will be listed alphabetically.

The library subscription to the JSTOR is also available to you if you are off-campus--you’ll be prompted to enter your BroncoWeb username and password.

In 1990 J. A. and Kathryn Albertson and Albertsons, Inc. donated six million dollars to enlarge and remodel the library (completed in 1995) to what you see today.

Click image to enlargeThe first book to become part of the new "Albertsons Library" was Vardis Fisher's The Caxton printers in Idaho, a short history. Visit the Special Collections section of the library for additional historical tidbits of the Boise State University campus.

So, join us for some cake and get to know your campus library!
