Awash in Information?

Are you overwhelmed by how much information is available to you? Do you know where to start your research? I recommend you begin with the Academic Search Premier (ASP) database, easily accessible from the library's research databases page (it's the first one on the list).

You name it and ASP will probably have articles about it from a wide spectrum of disciplines (economics, philosophy, geology, nursing, art--the list keeps going). Not only that, ASP also offers full-text access which means the article you want may be available right there on the screen where you have the option to download, e-mail, save, or print your citations and articles.

Another option--and something I strongly recommend--is to talk to a librarian; they are research professionals and will help you navigate and make sense of the multitude of research available at your fingertips.

Databases: Books in Print

The library has a new version of Books In Print from Bowker located on the Online Databases page. The OCLC version will go away at the end of August. I think you will prefer the new version.

You can also search for books currently in print by going to Blackwell's Bookshop where you can search for titles in the upper right.

To obtain bibliographic information for books that are out of print, I suggest using WorldCat, also available on the Online Databases page. To find out what an out of print title may cost, if available, try Alibris or Amazon.com.

Boise State University Author Recognition @thelibrary

Albertsons Library is pleased to announce its second annual Boise State University Author Recognition. The recognition events celebrate all Boise State University faculty and employee authors who published a book, article, or creative work between September 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006.

Citations for the 2007 recognition are now being accepted online at http://library.boisestate.edu/faculty/ The citation deadline for this year's recognition events is November 15, 2006.

Our recognition will be in three parts. First, a 2005-2006 Boise State University authors bibliography will be available online. Second, in January and February, the library will have a display featuring the books, articles, and creative works published during this period. Third, on February 7, 2007, from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Albertsons Library will host a reception where the university community is invited to meet the authors and celebrate their scholarship.

Textbook Library @thelibrary

The ASBSU has opened a Textbook Library at the Albertsons Library. People can donate textbooks that will be available for checkout at the Reserve counter on the first floor of the library.

To see a list of books in the Textbook Library, go to the library catalog at 'Find Books' and select 'Library Reserves'. Under 'Instructor,' scroll down to 'Textbook Library', highlight it and then select the 'Search' button to see an alphabetical list of titles. The textbook list is also available on the 'Department' scroll down as: TBL 000:Textbook Library and from the 'Course' option as: TBL 000:Textbook Library.

Databases: JSTOR

Albertsons Library is very pleased to announce the purchase of a Boise State online campus-wide subscription to the entire JSTOR collection. JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated.

The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines, including history, economics, political science, education, ecology, business, mathematics, music, and language and literature. JSTOR is available now from any Boise State campus workstation.

You can search the JSTOR database from the Find Articles section of the Library home page or find the individual journals in the Find Journals section. From the Journals List, select Vendor from the pull down menu, type in JSTOR, enter, and all of the journals in JSTOR will be listed alphabetically. The library subscription to the JSTOR is also available to you if you are off-campus--you’ll be prompted to enter your BroncoWeb username and password.

Databases: Chronicle of Higher Education

Albertsons Library is pleased to announce the purchase of a Boise State online campus-wide subscription to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The Chronicle is the number one source of news, information, and job postings for higher education, faculty, and administrators.

The Chronicle is available now from any Boise State campus workstation—just click on the Journals link from the Library home page, enter the title Chronicle of Higher Education, and select “From Publisher.” The library subscription to the Chronicle is also available to you if you are off-campus--you’ll be prompted to enter your BroncoWeb username and password.

Mountains Beyond Mountains @thelibrary

We @thelibrary are excited to promote Tracy Kidder's book Mountains Beyond Mountains to kick off the First-Year Student Reading Program.

Government: Find Stats Online

Where would you look to find the percentage of U.S. households that own a computer? You can find the most recent government statistics online in a report titled A Nation Online, 2004 published by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration. You can also find statistics on computer use in the Statistical Abstract of the United States, an annual compilation of U.S. government statistics.

Library Web Page Gets a Facelift

You might have noticed the library's web page is sporting a new look. We changed the banner (clicking on it will still take you to the library's home page, just as the clicking the Boise State logo will take you to the university's home page) and added some color to our main service points.

We've simplified the arrangement of our navigation points and tightened the overall "look" of the page. We also split the "Find Articles" link to take you to our article databases list, where you can select from a variety of article databases or link to our subject guides, Journals List, and online databases.

It's a small step to address your web browsing needs. If you have any questions or concerns, do let us know.

Internet: Librarians' Internet Index

Exploring the web can be a lot of fun but you can quickly get bogged down with a hefty amount of great looking websites and very little time to chew on their worthiness. You can, however, rely on the acumen and discerning eye the Librarians’ Internet Index (Lii.org) website.

Lii.org maintains an selective collection of websites arranged in 14 main topics and about 300 related topics. They also provide in-depth coverage on specific topics on their “Feature Collections” sections.

Each website is analyzed, catalogued, described, and assigned Library of Congress Subject Headings. If you find a website to your liking you can find more information by clicking on the icons next to the title, or you can e-mail yourself the link for further study. Go ahead, explore.
